You’re Fired from Trying to Control the Future

We can’t control the future, so what do we do?  I think the most common response is to worry.

Good thing for us, that Jesus has much to say about worry!

Two Reasons Not to Worry:

 1.      Worry Won’t Control the Future (God Does)

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?  Matthew 6:25 (NIV)

Worry doesn’t put food on the table.  Worry doesn’t put clothes on your back.  Worry doesn’t make sense, it makes problems.

A study on worry revealed…

40% of our worries never come to pass.
30 % are related to past decisions that cannot be changed
12 % involve other people’s perceptions of us, most of which we exaggerate.
10% relate to health.  The truth is your health only gets worse when you worry!
ONLY 8% of our worry is legitimate.  Or something we can actually change.

To worry about something you can’t change is useless.  To worry about something you can change is useless.  Either way you shouldn’t worry.  If you can change it, change it.  If you can’t, don’t worry about it.

Worry is stewing without doing.  Worrying cannot change the past.  Worrying cannot control the future.  All worrying does is make me miserable today.  It ruins my life.  It saps the strength that I need for today’s problems.  Corrie Ten Boom a holocaust survivor said, “Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.”

 2.  Worry Won’t Meet My Needs.

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Matt. 6:26 (NIV)
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.   If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Matt. 6:28 & 30 (NIV)

Now, Jesus gives us two lessons from nature.  First He talks about bird watching, “God takes care of birds, aren’t you a lot more valuable than birds?  And then He moves to a botany lesson.  He says, “Look at the flowers, how God took the time to make so exquisitely a flower that’s so beautiful and colorful not even going to last a week.”

Worry is not natural.  You weren’t born worrying.  It’s something you learn.  That’s good because if it’s something you learned, it’s something that can be unlearned.   Worry doesn’t meet my needs, God does.

It’s like the lady walking down the road with a heavy back pack.  A car came along and picked her up. About three miles down the road the driver said, “Why don’t you take off your back pack and put it on the floor?  I know it’s a heavy load.”  She said, “Oh, no!  It’s enough for you to carry me.  I’ll carry my own load!”

That’s the way we treat God.

Two Ways to Reduce Worry:

1.     Get to Know God Better

31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  Matthew 6:31-32 (NIV)

God knows your needs.  Don’t act like a pagan. What’s a pagan?  A pagan is somebody who doesn’t know or believe in God. Don’t worry like somebody who doesn’t believe.

He says non believers have a right to worry.  They ought to.  They’re trying to make it through the world on their own effort.  I’d worry too!   If you are a believer, get to know God better, read the bible, pray, get together with other believers in a Growth Group for support.

As a believer we don’t have to worry because we trust a heavenly Father who promises to take care of us.   I love the phrase, “Your Father knows you need them.”  Yet how often do we act like God is totally unaware of our needs.

I love the story of Arturo Toscanini, the great conductor, was sitting at his podium before a concert one evening. As the orchestra warmed up just minutes before the performance, a bassoon player approached him in a fearful panic. “Maestro, I am very sorry, but my instrument has suffered an accident, and the E-flat will not sound. I am afraid I will not be able to play tonight.”

Upon hearing this news, Toscanini went silent and closed his eyes. The bassoon player cowered in fear of his fury. The great conductor put his hands to his head and continued in silence, adding to the poor bassoon player’s agony.

At last Toscanini looked up and said quietly, “Do not worry, E-flat does not appear in your music tonight.” Toscanini had played through the entire concert in his mind, reviewing every note the bassoon player would have to play. With his intimate knowledge of the music, the conductor was able to reassure the bassoon player that everything would be all right.

God knows the future, trust Him with it.

2. Trust God for Things I Can’t Control.

Much of life is beyond our control and I think God allows this so we can learn to trust him.

33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Matthew 6:33-34 (NIV)

When I was a child, whenever I had a need, I would go to my father, I would ask him for money for scout camping trips, baseball, football, soccer, church youth events all the activities I was involved in, he would give me the money.   When I got older he said, “Get a job,” but as a child I didn’t worry about where the money was coming from.  I asked him for the money and he supplied.  God says, “I’m your heavenly Father. And you don’t have to worry.  I will take care of your needs, trust Me.”

Worry and trust are opposites.  They cannot live together in a home.  When worry comes in the front door, trust goes out the back door.  Worry will live in your home until you invite trust to come back in the front door.  They cannot live in your mind together.  Fill your mind with trust — trust God in every area — and worry departs.

Have you ever read your insurance policy?  Its great night-time reading if you want to fall asleep fast! Whenever I get an insurance policy, I read through quickly what it covers.  Niki knows the medical policies I know the auto and home.   Once I know what it covers, I don’t worry about what’s covered.  I know it’s going to be taken care of.

The Bible is God’s policy to us.  He says, “This is what I’m committing Myself to regarding your life, your family, your finances, your health, your past, your present, your future.”  When you know it’s covered in your policy, you can relax.  He’ll make good on it.

What’s got you worried?  The economy?  Your job?  A personal problem?  Your marriage?  Health?  A problem with friends?  A problem at work?

Jesus Christ has made it possible for you to live without worry. Put your life in His hands and trust Him on a day by day, moment by moment basis.  You can live without worry. Put your trust in Christ.

You’re Fired from Trying to Be Good Enough

Have you heard someone say?  Maybe even you have said it:

“I’ll go to church.”

“I’ll clean up my act.”

“I’ll work real hard”

“I’ll stop this bad habit” in response to how to be acceptable to God?

It may be human logic, but it’s not biblical.

Want to hear something shocking? Or even offensive?

All our righteous acts are like filthy rags” Isaiah 64:6b (NIV)

The filthy rags that Isaiah was referring to were the rags that women used during their menstrual cycle!  Ooh yuck.

I can hear it now, “Darrell that’s insulting.  I am not a filthy rag!  God is not insulting you,  He says that you’re “righteousness acts are filthy.”

When measured against God’s purity a person’s attempts to be pure are no better than filthy rags in God’s sight.  This image may be unpleasant to some, but like it or not is the picture painted by the Bible.  A person’s dislike of the description is nothing compared to the repulsion and loathing God feels toward sin.

Too often we view sin as only a slight mistake or problem.  In reality, sin is more like deadly and infectious staph infection.  Think of it like cancer that has spread throughout the body.   For wide spread contamination, we need more than a rag or a band-aid that we apply ourselves!  We need a physician, and a remedy.

That’s why we need Jesus!  He makes us righteous.   The Bible says, “This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”  Romans 3:22

Righteousness comes from our good works?  Not a chance!  Righteousness comes from “faith in Jesus Christ.”  Believe in Him, become righteous.  It’s that simple.

You’re fired from trying to be good enough!  You can’t be good enough.  But that’s ok. That’s why Jesus is our savior.

Stop trying to be good enough and put your faith in Christ.  Then you will be good enough.

FAQ’s – The Apprentice Weekend

Here are some of the most “Frequently Asked Questions” about our upcoming event, The Apprentice Weekend.  If you have other questions, just comment at the bottom and I’ll get it answered.

 Q:  Is this event free?

A:  Yes, this is a free event for our community — a gift from our church.  Come eat, drink, have some fun, meet a TV celebrity and enjoy an evening with your family all for free!

Q: When is the Apprentice Weekend?

A:  Saturday, July 30th from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM – Food, Activities for the Kids & Gold Party as well as  Sunday, July 31st (both services – 10:00 AM & 11:30 AM) for Clint Robertson’s testimony & Gold Party.  Also we are kicking off a brand new series on Sunday called, “You’re Fired!”

Q:  Why is Clint Robertson coming?

A:  Being on Season 10 of The Apprentice, Clint brings the unique experience of being a reality TV star.  More importantly, he is a Christ follower as well as a husband, dad, and entrepreneur.  We all can learn something from his life as he shares.  He will be with us July 30th & 31st.  He will answer questions on Saturday and share his testimony on Sunday morning.  Come out and meet him and his family.

Q:  Darrell, how do you know Clint?

A:  A friend from college, Shane Miller (Shane and I went on mission trips to Mexico together and attended Bible studies while at Texas A&M) grew up with Clint Robertson.  They went to high school and church together.  Shane says that he is a godly man and has a great story to share.

 Q: Why the Gold Party?

A:  Clint currently lives in Florida.  The cost for travel, lodging, and meals for him and his wife would be expensive for our church.  Since Clint endorses the company Gold Rush America, they will cover his expenses if we host a Gold Party.

Q:  Why does Clint support this Gold Company?

A:  Clint supports this company because he knows the owner and because the company helps people.  In this tough economy, people can get extra money they need from items they no longer want.  Also, some people wanting to earn extra income may choose to work for Gold Rush America by hosting gold parties and earning income for themselves.

Q:  How will the Gold Party for this event work?

A:  Bring broken bracelets, chains, earrings, old class or wedding rings and outdated styles of jewelry.  There will be a table that is clearly labeled on Saturday & Sunday.  My friend Shane, who works for Gold Rush America, will test it, weigh it, and pay you on the spot.  He will issue a check from Gold Rush America, not cash.

 Q:  What about silver?

A:  Yes, they will pay for sterling silver and platinum.  Got old silverware, silver jewelry or old coins?  Bring them and get paid.

Q:  What if I am not sure if an item is really gold, silver, or platinum?

A:  Just bring anything you have or have doubts about and Shane or his wife will test it so you know for sure.  They say people bring things they thought were fake, but turned out to be real, so just bring anything you think could be silver, gold, or platinum.

Q: What about stones such as diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires in the jewelry?

A:  If they are large, Shane or his wife can remove them and give them back to you.

Q:  By bringing silver, gold or platinum am I helping the church?

A:  Yes, the church will receive 15% of all proceeds from the Gold Party.

Q: Can I donate my gold or the proceeds to the church?

A: Yes, you can tell Shane you want the money or a portion of it to go to the church and it’s done.

Q:  Will I need anything else when I bring my silver, gold, or platinum?

A:  Yes, you will need to have your driver’s license or the number.  The state of Texas requires Gold Rush America to issue a receipt with the details of your transaction.

Q:  Can I see the episode of The Apprentice that Clint was on?

A:  Yes, you can see portions from episodes on You Tube.  Here are two to get you started:

Finale Night – The Apprentice 10 – The Winner is… (Brandy Kuenztel or Clint Robertson??)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzxBnT_UWlU

Clint Robertson:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=262_fh8cvns

Q: Darrell, why have this event at all?  What does a TV celebrity, a Gold Party, hot dogs or moon walks have to do with church or Christ?

A:  As we often say, we will never change our message -The Bible, who Christ is, salvation, etc.  But we will change our methods.  We will use different methods to reach people.  We are a church, a group of people who have found Christ.  We are just beggars showing other beggars where to find bread.  Christ is the “bread of life” (John 6:35).  Clint Robertson has found Christ and follows Him; he will share this good news.

I have no doubt that people will be drawn, perhaps to the event or series at first, but will come to understand that they need Christ.  They may be new to the community and need a church home.  They may have been out of church for years and they come to this event or series and renew their commitment to Christ and begin following Him again.

I am sure that we will have stories of people who came to our church because of a door hanger, mailer or The Apprentice Weekend.  It’s a step or a method to help people to KNOW Christ.  When someone comes to KNOW Christ, it’s the most important decision they can make — it forgives their past, secures their future and makes their present manageable with Christ.  This event is just one small way that we fulfill our vision of SHOWING Christ to our world.

The Apprentice Weekend!

The Apprentice Weekend will be here soon!   It’s Saturday July 30th6:30 – 8:30 PM.  We will have a gaming truck, moon walks, hot dogs, sausage wraps, pop corn and drinks. Oh and its all FREE!  We will have a special guest who was a runner-up on The Apprentice last year, Clint Robertson.  If you would like to know more about him, here is his website:  http://www.clintrobertson.com/testimonials

At Saturday’s event Clint will be there to meet people and answer questions about the show, Donald Trump, etc.  Plus we will host a Gold Party.  I wasn’t sure about the details of a gold party, so a friend explained it to me:

“A gold party is basically an event where church members or the community come and bring  their old gold and silver that they no longer wear such as a broken bracelet, an unmatched ear-ring, an old class ring, etc…. what they bring is tested on the spot and payment is made right then and there. And believe me; people are always shocked at the high prices they get paid because gold prices are so high right now. An average person normally makes a few hundred dollars.”  Shane Miller – Gold Rush America representative.

Then on Sunday Clint will give his testimony in our brand new series “Your Fired!”

We will do door hangers, mailers and invite cards to invite our community and to promote this event.

I am very excited about the potential reach many new people!

Did you know that so far this year an average of 2 people a week have indicated a Commitment to Christ!   That’s 2 people every week that are free from hell and heaven bound!

This summer’s outreach will reach even more people.   Here’s how you can help:

  1. Pray – for the Apprentice Weekend, the events, the new series, door hangers, mailers, and invite cards.   Pray that people in our community would come, hear the gospel and come to KNOW Christ.
  2. Serve – we need volunteers for Saturday’s event, serving hot dogs, monitoring a moon walk, etc.  We will hang door hangers 2 Saturdays, and 2 Sundays in July to invite the community, you can get more information here:  www.ridgefellowship.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=100&Itemid=99
  3. Give – It’s a free event for the community but our church absorbs all the costs.  We have to buy hot dogs, condiments, and drinks.  You can donate HEB gift cards.  The gaming truck will cost $1000.  Door hangers cost $800 (for 10,000) Mailers cost $900 (for 15,000) plus $1,500 for postage.   We will need your help to pay for these outreach efforts.  Perhaps you feel led to give to our “Outreach Fund” right now.  Just click here:  www.ridgefellowship.com/giving/online-giving.html  and click “Outreach.

It is exciting to consider how God will use your prayers, time and giving to reach people in this community.   Dozens more will commit their life to Christ in the months to come because of what we do right now!

Be watching for an “Apprentice Weekend” table in the hallway at church.  You can find out more information, get signed up or make a donation.

Thanks for doing your part.  Together we can SHOW Christ to our world,  Darrell
